What were the most popular Cryptocurrencies in the last month? (According to Reddit)
It often feels like the world of Cryptocurrency is moving at a million miles per hour. Every day, a new coin pops up claiming to be the next crypto to go “to the moon!”.
With so much noise in the space, it can be hard to tell apart manufactured hype and legitimate conversations online.
As a result, we’ve decided to put together a list of the top 10 most talked about cryptocurrencies on r/cryptocurrency, one of the largest cryptocurrencies discussion forums.
How we did it
In order to put this list together, we scraped the top 1000 posts in r/cryptocurrency over the last month to see which are the crypto currencies that are causing the most legitimate buzz in the crypto space. Specifically, we looked at the top 1,058 posts from September 19, 2021 to October 19, 2021.
By only taking the top 1000 posts, we can have a degree of certainty on the quality of the posts, rather than scraping every single post that gets submitted. If we scraped every single post, we could potentially include those submitted by spammers or bad actors.
In order to do this, we used ParseHub, a free and powerful web scraper that can scrape data from any website. You can download ParseHub for free to start scraping data from reddit right now.

The top 10 most discussed Cryptocurrencies on Reddit r/cryptocurrency
Once we extracted all the data we needed. We organized our list based on mentions of the currencies across post titles and inside text posts. We also took into consideration the amount of upvotes and comments said posts garnered.
While some coins had fewer posts dedicated to them, they generated significantly more conversation than coins with more dedicated posts.
Lastly, we took into consideration mentions of both the coin names (Bitcoin) and tickers (BTC).
Alright, with all this out of the way, let’s get started.
The most popular cryptocurrencies talked about on reddit are:
- Bitcoin and Ethereum
- Shiba Inu
- Cardano
- Algorand
- Tether
- Dogecoin
- Ripple /XRP
- Solana
- ChainLink/ LINK
#1 and #2 Bitcoin and Ethereum
Surprising absolutely no one, the top most discussed cryptocurrencies on r/cryptocurrencies are Bitcoin and Ethereum. After all, these are also the 2 largest cryptocurrencies by market cap and considered to be the 2 most popular ones.
Despite their relative seniority, conversation on both cryptos dominates the space significantly. Out of all posts analyzed, 15.31% of them mentioned Bitcoin in their title. About 3.5% of them mentioned Ethereum.
When we look at text posts, where the real conversations often happen. Bitcoin is mentioned in 36.46% of posts. About 19.09% of text posts mentioned Ethereum.
With Bitcoin reaching new all-time-high prices and Ethereum-based NFTs continuing to drive up hype, we expect these 2 to dominate conversations in the space for the foreseeable future.
#3 Shiba Inu
On a more shocking note, the 3rd most discussed cryptocurrency in r/cryptocurrencies is only the 19th largest by market cap.
Shiba Inu was started as a new memecoin in the same spirit as Dogecoin. Despite only being over a year old, it has gained tons of attention lately due to its rise in price and meme status.
Not only is Shiba Inu way up in mentions when compared to its market cap, but the conversations around it are overwhelmingly positive.
While only being mentioned in about 1.42% of post titles and 4.24% of text posts, these posts garnered over 20,000 upvotes and 11,818 comments. In fact, posts about Shiba Inu garnered almost as many upvotes and comments as posts about Ethereum, with only a fraction of posts mentioning it.
Posts mentioning Shiba Inu garnered 22,641 total upvotes vs Ethereum’s 22,797.
Shiba Inu shows a lot of strength in the conversation side of things, we shall see how it translates to actual value in the coming months.
#4 Cardano
At #4 we have the 4th largest cryptocurrency by market cap, Cardano.
Despite its age (6 years, which might as well be a lifetime in the crypto space), Cardano has remained popular. Cardano is considered to be the largest cryptocurrency to use a proof-of-stake blockchain.
Cardano was mentioned in 1.23% of all post titles and in 9.08% of all text posts (higher than SHIBA). Posts about Cardano are also positively received with a healthy total count of 10,050 upvotes and 4,740 comments garnered.
Cardano remains a valuable and popular coin in the crypto space.
#5 Algorand
In a rather controversial spot, we have Algorand, the 20th largest coin by market cap (Technically, the coin name is just Algo while Algorand is the underlying platform, but alas).
While Algorand managed to garner a high number of mentions, said posts were not necessarily that popular.
0.76% of all posts titles and 6.26% of all text posts mentioned Algorand. However, these posts garnered fewer upvotes and comments than multiple coins further down the list. Tether, Ripple and Dogecoin all garnered more upvotes while Dogecoin and Tether generated more comments with fewer dedicated posts.
Algorand remains a popular coin that struggles to build as much hype as others.
#6 Tether
Next up, we have Tether, the 5th largest cryptocurrency by market cap. Similarly to Cardano, Tether has a relatively standard rate of upvotes and comments when compared to the amount of posts.
In fact, Tether has close to half as many post mentions, upvotes and comments as Cardano. This is despite their market caps being incredibly close to each other (70B to 69B as of the time of writing).
While Tether sparks a similar positive sentiment as Cardano, it does not spark it at the same volume as its neighbor does.
#7 Dogecoin
At #7 we have the cryptocurrency known as the original memecoin, Dogecoin. It currently is the 10th largest crypto by market cap.
While Dogecoin received fewer mentions on post titles than other coins on this list, it garnered an overwhelming amount of upvotes and comments on r/cryptocurrency. As a result, we’ve bumped it up to #7 on the list.
Despite only being mentioned in 0.57% of post titles, it was mentioned in 5.95% of all text posts. It also garnered 9,319 upvotes and 4,583 comments, that’s more than Algorand and Tether combined!
Dogecoin remains incredibly popular and continues to generate lots of discussion in the crypto space.
#8 Ripple / XRP
At #8 we have XRP (Also known as Ripple, the name of its underlying platform), one of the oldest cryptocurrencies on the list. Despite being founded 3 years after Bitcoin, XRP remains popular and its currently the 6th largest cryptocurrency by market cap.
This popularity translates to the amount of posts discussing XRP in r/cryptocurrency. XRP is mentioned in 0.66% of all post titles and 2.35% of all text posts. Said posts garnered 3,015 upvotes (More than Algorand) and 1,088 comments.
Ripple remains a moderately popular coin in the cryptocurrency space.
#9 Solana
At #9 we've got a relatively new cryptocurrency, Solana. Despite its recent launch in April of 2019, Solana has already become one of the most popular cryptocurrencies and it’s currently the 7th largest by market cap.
Solana’s popularity in r/cryptocurrency holds up in a similar manner. Solana was mentioned in 0.28% of all post titles and 4.23% of all text posts. Said posts garnered 656 upvotes and 1,037 comments.
Solana has managed to become moderately popular in a very short amount of time.
#10 ChainLink / LINK
Last but not least we have LINK (Also known as ChainLink, the name of the underlying platform), the 17th largest cryptocurrency by market cap.
LINK is another coin that manages to drive a high amount of conversation around itself despite its lower market cap. LINK is mentioned 0.19% of all post titles mention it and in 2.66% of all text posts (And yes, we accounted for mentions of the word “link” that referred to hyperlinks and not the coin.)
Said posts garnered 511 upvotes and 429 comments. Not too shabby for #17!
LINK continues to rise in popularity, we shall see if this popularity can translate into future valuations.
